The sound quality of the microcassette format has been improved. Sony almost always makes pretty much the best electronic device in each category. Unfortunately, none of these facts apply to this model (or to any Sony microcassette recorder). While the M679 has a solid build, good features, easy-to-use controls, and relatively light weight, it doesn't sound great. The playback is so distorted that even at low volume it gives the impression that the volume is cranked up to the max and I don't mean volume but clarity of playback. Unless the speech you're recording (these devices aren't designed for music) is spoken directly into the microphone from a few feet away or less, you'll have trouble understanding the words, especially if the speaker isn't a good one clay used. Diction. I can't recommend this unit or any Sony microcassette recorder (I've had a few Sony ones) because of all the great products they make they kind of fall short in this category. If you're looking for a good microcassette recorder I'd recommend something from Olympus, or if great sound quality is really important go for a digital recorder from Sony, where they more than make up for the shortcomings of their microcassette line.
