They lift up to reveal the ends of the cord for trimming. When closed tightly, they clip onto the cord and hold it in place. To attach the watch yourself you can either use the jump ring or open the clasps, remove one side of the cord and thread it through the hole at the end of the watch case and then thread it back through the metal clasp, forming a small loop on the cord, thread it then put it back into the flap and close it tightly. If you are interested in pearls, it will all make sense once you see the actual product. It's very easy and you don't even need any tools other than scissors to cut the length and a small screwdriver to pry the latch holding the cables.
