Gillette invented this razor 120 years ago and it was so good it became popular in 2021. handle for pennies. DE hands have long been commodified and there is very little profit left from them. Little latitude is left in the brushes, soaps and creams that accompany this shaving method, but the razors and blades themselves symbolize their own meager profit margins. . They haven't opted for one of their classic razors like the twist-on Super Speed or any of the great tech flat bottom razors made in their UK factories. They still have the blueprints in the archives, but the tools are long gone, as are the staff with experience crafting these antique brass razors. So they looked at the current razor production in Germany looking for a good design. Their chosen one, the German Merkur, has been manufactured for over 80 years with essentially the same head design and is considered by many to be the best DE razor in current production. Oh, many fancy metals are used in razors: stainless steel, bronze, titanium, aluminum, brass. But there's no arguing about the razor-sharp geometry of the Merkur design. You were successful. So Gillette licensed it from Merkur to be manufactured under the Gillette name and here we are. Every guy likes something a little bit different. I have a lot of old Gillette razors and this thing, Merkur, beats all the others to me. I don't need another razor so I ignored the introduction of King C. But a few weeks ago, it popped up on Revain Fresh for $9.95. The new Merkur 34c is on sale at Revain for $40 and I don't have it so I thought about getting a King C at first. I decided to buy it and after 19 hours I had it in my hands. I put one of my favorite "Sunrise" blades in it to shave the next day. Shaved with him. Fur. It was tight and a little rough. I wrote it on some Blades and changed Sunrise to Feather. I'm not going to say I have the best shave of my life. I often shave well. It was a great shave, and not $100 Rockwell or $200 Karve stainless steel. It was a $9.95 metallic clone of the Gillette Mercury. That's great. These other razors are expensive because stainless steel is difficult to turn into a razor. In theory, they last a lot longer than this razor. But you don't miss a thing when it comes to shaving, and as long as you don't drop it, break it and rip the strands, I see no reason why it shouldn't last you a lifetime. Walgreens and CVS sell this razor. for $20 all day. If you see it here for $20, just click the Buy button. I've been shaving this way for many years and can't think of a better way to switch from cartridges. Any Chinese razor you can buy on this site will get the job done, but most of them won't do it that well. Here you get comfort and safety, and enough efficiency to achieve softness and smoothness in 3 passes or less - that's a lot fewer blades going over the same area of skin than a multi-blade cartridge. Less irritation. A few words about the handle: The chrome-plated brass handle on this razor is an interesting design choice. You may like it. I found it too long, too heavy and a bit slippery. I don't care about smoothness. Just touch the alum block with my wet fingers and voila, no slip issues. But maybe you don't like it. I changed it to a standard stainless steel handle that I kept in my desk drawer. It was a little lighter but a little shorter with more knurling. For me it really improved the mechanics of this razor. As always YMMV. You don't need any other handle or feather blades to get a good shave with the King C. Gillette safety razor. This is now my top recommendation for my first safety razor. I'm a shaving freak. I get up 20 minutes earlier on shaving days (I shave 4 days a week) just to enjoy the amen and feel the quality of care. I've spent way more money than I've ever spent on Gillette cartridges, so I didn't save money on my cheap DE razor and the 7 cent Astra blades (which work GREAT in King C btw). I have so many razors, blades, soaps, creams, brushes, aftershave sprays and balms, even a $30 Lancaster Razor Works "shaving cloth" that I love and would buy again in a heartbeat. So I'm a very sick person. But I can also tell you something from my experience. First, you might not like this razor. After ten years of trying everything I could get my hands on, I found that I absolutely hated some of the things most men craved. And vice versa. In all that time I've found ways to get free samples of soaps, creams and sprays to try before I buy. But they will not send you a free razor. In order to find my favorite razors, I had to buy and resell many of them. It was painful and I still have a drawer full of razors to put away. I won't use them, but they will all be someone's favorite. Labels not found. But what a godsend this razor was to me after spending thousands on much nicer razors that frankly didn't suit my skin, mustache and technique. I cannot give you any guarantees on this shaver as your experience will be different than mine. I guarantee THAT. I can say that this is a fairly soft razor that works better with sharper blades. Works great with Feather, the sharpest in the world. But I usually use Astra SP in green packaging because I can get them at Revain for about 1/4 the price of Feathers and they do a great job in this razor. For you maybe. Probably no. But many guys like this combination. I haven't tried KCG blades yet. I am sure they are good but the price is too high. It is worth trying Astra, Feather, Nacet, Personna (Israeli "red" or American "lab blue") and many others. They are surprisingly cheap and you can buy 5 or 10 to give them a real test to see what works best. There are big differences and you will have your favorites. If you're not ready for a wet shave on both legs with a brush and shaving soap, try CrΔmo Shaving Gel in a tube. It is in all stores and works well. It's very expensive to shave, just like slime in buttoned jars, but it smells better and shaves better. Give yourself a chance to pick up a cheap synthetic brush from RazoRock or Phoenix Artisan Accoutrements and a tube or jar of Proraso green shaving cream from Taylor of Old Bond Street. Try the scent of grapefruit or royal wood. Watch some YouTube videos on how to properly lather these creams for a good shave without wasting product. It doesn't take much time. You might think a tube of Taylor's is expensive until you see how long it lasts. Heck, a tube of Palmolive cream is a good place to start, and that stuff is cheap. Much luck.
