My standard comparison for black pants like this are the St. John's Bay pants formerly sold by a major retailer who has chosen to discontinue making clothes for adults who work, for incomprehensible reasons. I own many pairs of that pant and now face having to find a replacement hopefully just as good or at least reasonably similar. SJB pairs typically last me 6 months in perfect shape and another three months in good shape before they turn gray on the edges and need to be replaced.So I am directly comparing these Savane pants to SJB. The Savane fit OK with some tightness in the thighs, look nice and are nicely finished but after one wash -the wash you're supposed to do before wearing new clothes- they've already started to "gray" on corners and edges. This is with correct detergent and washing practices. Still, I've never before had pants age like this after just one wash.After a couple wash-and-wear cycles, the aging seems to have stabilized but I have serious doubts these pants will keep on looking good for six months much less longer. New clothes really should stay looking new through the first half dozen or so washes and only then begin to show wear. Again comparing to SJB, those pants actually need five or six washes or more before they cease being lint magnets. They need a lot of break in and the result is a solid product for many months afterward. The same cannot be said for these Savane.Still, they were affordable. And they are available and hopefully will stay available, because I don't see many other options right now. Knocked off a star for the lack of color-fastness concerns. I feel like three stars is about right.Pro tip: for black pants, black scuff-cover shoe polish does a great job covering grayed edges and corners. Apply, let dry, and wear the clothing as normal. It's water soluble so it will come out next time you wash, but meanwhile it's cheap will take a lot of age out of the item, and nobody will be able to tell.
