Soft light for ease in the dark but you don't need a start light. I installed this rod and a 10 inch rod in my Liberty firearm safe. It had a lighting strip whose cords broke over time and could be plugged into an outlet through a small slot in the back of the safe, so installing these strips was easy. They will have a white string showing where it's ever been placed unless you can thread it through or behind something. We don't want to be caught off guard when we open a safe in the middle of the night to responsibly protect ourselves and our children's lives and not be able to quickly and effectively see what we're up to. They softly illuminate the vault so the top shelf containing our pistols and the bottom rifle and shotguns are clearly visible, but you won't suddenly go blind or lose your sight due to spots in your eyes. I am very happy with the work of the sensor, it works like a fridge that you open and the light comes on.
