Accessories may not be supported

I received USB cables today. The first one I took out of the box stopped working after a few minutes. The charging/connecting icon was on when I first connected it to my phone, but a minute later a pop-up message appeared saying "This accessory may not be supported" and my phone disconnected from charging. It was really a disappointment.
