Review on XPG GAMMIX 2280 Internal AGAMMIXS70 2T C by Joshua Mejia

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great SSD for the price and YES, it's Mac compatible.

Excellent for a budget NVME drive. To be honest I was very close to ordering this item as the product page says "This SSD is not compatible with Mac. Additional parts may be required for Mac use." This statement is confusing and should be removed. I did all sorts of research before ordering this SSD to see why it wouldn't be Mac compatible. Fortunately the claim is false. I think people get confused and order this for their Mac expecting to have their internal Mac SSD replaced (which is proprietary and you can't change it) and end up getting the drive back. So yeah, if your computer/mac doesn't have an NVME slot then obviously that won't work but it is indeed Mac compatible.I just received my m1 mac mini.I ordered the smallest SSD Apple offers (256GB) because Apple overcharges for storage upgrades ($800 for 2TB I think) So I wanted to increase my storage with Thunderbolt 3. So I ordered an OWC Envoy Express Thunderbolt 3 SSD enclosure.I have ada ta messaged them about their claim that it was not Mac compatible and explained what I was planning (Thunderbolt 3 external enclosure) and they pretty much sent back to me that the drive is supposed to be directly on the motherboard. I didn't listen and ordered anyway. There is no reason why an NVME SSD should not function properly unless there is a firmware issue. It didn't work, made no sense at all. Anyway I got the disc and it works great. Speeds aren't as fast as advertised, but that's to be expected since it's not a drive limitation, rather OWC cases. So buying a more expensive SSD would be a waste of money as I can't even get the best out of that SSD. It's not as fast as the internal Mac SSD, but close enough that most people won't notice the difference. The slc cache on this drive is quite large so you won't often see a huge drop in speed unless you frequently upload some large files to the drive (let's say VMs or something). The speed slows down a bit when the slc cache is exhausted, but the recovery is very fast. I'm very satisfied and it's a great price for a 2TB SSD. Note that the only problem with using it on a Mac is that you cannot use the adata software package (it was only designed for Windows). Before using the SSD, I put it in my Windows desktop, but it had the latest firmware installed. I think you might be able to update it if you have a Windows PC with an external Thunderbolt port, but I'm not 100% sure because I haven't tried it. Unfortunately, they don't have Mac software.
