Review on Surface Docking Station Display Ethernet by Joe Jimenez

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Solid hardware but no HDMI audio passthrough

I have a Surface Pro 4 that needs additional ports to make it a better desktop and didn't want to buy a Surface Pro dock for the price. I ended up giving this product a try as it adds a much needed HDMI output, Ethernet input, USB 3.0 and even a USB-C port. There is also an audio jack, USB 2.0 and VGA ports. I was pleasantly surprised at the weight of this dongle and the weight helps keep everything in place once you start plugging it in. I had no problem getting the HDMI signal to my 1440p monitor along with audio, and Ethernet classifies as a gig. I have 400 Mbps in and 20 in and was able to increase my ingress to 275+ and 20+ in. Not that bad. The USB 3.0 ports seem to work well with my external hard drive and I look forward to using them every day. Solid. Will be updated if anything changes in the future.------------------------------------------------- -- -- -------- --------------------- Not sure if others have noticed, but if you want to get your tone from your surface - > this hub -> HDMI -> monitor or TV, it probably won't work. I have a surface pro 4 and have tried to output audio to my monitor but there is no option to select a monitor like when I go directly from surface to monitor. The audio only comes through the headphone jack on the hub. I don't think the headphone jack has mic capabilities, so you may need to plug your headset directly into a Surface if you need both mic and sound.

Pros
  • Excellent overall performance
Cons
  • Doubtful
