I have several tanks, better known as MTS, and I always use both biological and mechanical filtration in each tank. Mechanical filtration at a speed of 10 times per hour + sponge filter whose capacity is twice the size of the tank. I use a suitable air pump and leave it in a sponge filter at full power. On my larger tanks, I always replace the riser pipe with a taller pipe that stays about 2 inches below the waterline to increase water flow. I really wish they had some different lift tubing or an adjustable one, but I buy a 4ft plastic tubing from a home store for a very low price and just cut it to size. These sponges last about a year, and during maintenance I only push them into the old water from the aquarium about every 2.5-3 months.
