Review on 🎧 Shure SE846-CL High-Definition MicroDriver Earphones with Enhanced Subwoofer and Secure In-Ear Fit - Clear by Jacqueline Mclaurin

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Owned since 2013.

As the owner of a number of previous Shure headphones, I was thrilled when the SE-846 was released in 2013. I bought it as soon as it came out and have been listening to it ever since. I travel around the world at least 6 months a year and work on oil rigs. When I say these headphones are durable, I take that statement with a grain of salt. Sound Quality: Better than anything Shure, AKG, Westone, or UE makes. Compared to my SE-535s, this is a completely different sound quality. I have not heard any other headphones (including open electrostats) that more accurately capture the nuances of a double bass being played as part of a jazz trio. Fat, throaty bass that doesn't sound boomy or overbearing. On some of Charlie Haden's tracks you can hear the texture of his fingers on the strings. detail reproduction? Yes, the 846 has it. Like the SE-535, these headphones are an excellent size. It's easy to forget that you're wearing something in your ears. The soundstage is wide and not muddy at all. Good live recordings sound like you're there. Check out Stacey Kent's Dreamer in Concert for a good demonstration of this. You'll appreciate this best when listening to FLAC files, but even 320 kbps sounds good. Verdict: If you're looking for the best portable audio system for less than $3,000, start by shopping for the SE846 IEM headphones. Buy right once, cry once. I mostly use an Apple iPhone or MacBook for listening. I used to carry a standalone DAC/amp combo with me, but now I don't even bother. Headphones with iPhone 6+ and now 7+ (via adapter) are good enough to sound better than anything I've tried and I'm trying LOTS of headphones.

Pros
  • Not just useful for its intended purpose
Cons
  • Almost everything is fine
