Review on πŸ’Ύ ZEPLIN ELECTRONICS 512GB Portable SSD with USB Type-C and USB-A, Speeds Up to 550MB/s by Christopher Bacho

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Not as fast as advertised and something is wrong with the storage space.

I don't know what to do with this 1TB SSD. Technically, it doesn't need a USB 3.2 Gen 2 to reach speeds like a maximum of 523 MB/s read, 467 MB/s write (MacOS ExFAT) and 477 MB/s read, 417 MB/s write (Windows 10 ExFAT) still Faster USB 3.2 Gen 2 to USB 3.2 Gen 1 speeds (371/364 respectively on Windows 10 vs Gen 1 port). Many of these SSDs on the market experience a drastic drop in throughput due to heat build-up when files are transferred at high speeds for long periods of time. Zeplin is no exception, but somehow strange. On my dyno, I copied 1TB of files to a drive at just under 400MB/s for about 400GB, and then the speed dropped to about 8MB/s (yes, 8MB/s). : After that 400GB point, I couldn't copy files to disk at speeds over 8-10MB/s - on multiple systems with multiple filesystem types (macOS/Windows), which suggests something is wrong with it. Formatting the drive or deleting those 400GB files will return the full 400MB/s of writes until they disappear after about 400GB of file transfer. Even letting the drive cool down overnight didn't help. The write speed is still 8-10 MB/s. The drive is metal and has two very thin blue LEDs that blink when the drive is in use. The LEDs are maybe too thin and I wish there was a small pocket here. All in all, I'm not sure what's going on here. While it's fast at about 40% of its nominal storage capacity, after that it's consistently slower than a USB 2.0 flash drive, and that's unacceptable. 1 out of 5. Bad.
