They're incredibly bright - even on the lowest brightness setting, enough to show a clearly visible object on a wall more than 20 feet away before your eyes even settle got used to the dark. The small bathroom (6 x 5 feet) is bright enough not to turn on the light. My little kids don't want him in their room because he keeps them awake. They are so bright that I gave them a 4 instead of a 5. Aside from being too bright, they're almost perfect. They are very unobtrusive, have 2 brightness settings and an ambient light sensor. Perhaps it's too sensitive a touch, and they turn on a little earlier than they're really needed, but not in a way that detracts from their usefulness. there was never such a problem.
