A chubby 8 year old boy will fit in this medium sized jacket with little room to grow. It got pretty chilly in NYC over the weekend, with a low of 30 degrees Fahrenheit, and this jacket kept my nephew nice and warm. This kids arctic tundra jacket appears to be very well made. All seams are of high quality and the design looks quite timeless. The zippers are smooth and easy to fasten and undo. I like the waterproof and windproof fabric, good for playing in the snow. It probably won't keep him warm in -20 degrees Fahrenheit considering the jacket isn't that thick, but it should be fine if the temperature drops to 0 degrees Fahrenheit. I love the lined pockets to keep my hands warm and the reflective strips on the front and back are a nice touch for safety. The top covers the entire neck area, so unless it's very cold a scarf isn't really needed. I wish the inner "security pocket" used a zipper instead of velcro. I machine washed this jacket cold and hung it to dry.
