Review on πŸ“» Stay Prepared with the topAlert MD-019: Emergency AM/FM/WB/NOAA Alert LCD Solar Hand Crank Weather Alert Radio by Eric Chapman

Great deal at $25. The emergency call function is awesome!

OK. Maybe the box/packaging is cheap and the case isn't bulletproof, but overall it's a good deal. Firstly, the alert mode is just great: you don't need to tune into the weather channel - just extend the antenna, press the button and that's it. You can even leave the frequency band selection on FM or AM!. The radio will scan ALL 7 weather channels (LED will flash when scanning all channels) and upon receipt of an alert a very loud siren will sound followed by an audible weather report. Volume isn't important either - even if you were listening quietly and outputting low or no sound, the report will still be LOUD. All of this was tested during weekly tests on Wednesdays. I've read charging complaints - mine works fine, just charge the Li-ion battery (make sure the bottom switch is NOT set to AAA) with the included USB cable from any 500mA charging source (USB port of the computer). is right / your first choice here) at least 8-10 hours before first use instead of struggling with the crank or solar panel. Remember: the crank is for emergencies only and the solar panel is only for storing (filling up by slow charging) the lithium ion battery and neither are the main charging source (although I've tried both - they work - run for 1 minute gives 10-15 minutes Listening at a low volume is what you need in an emergency, right?). Also the tuning is digital so you know the exact station/frequency you are on, a good FM/AM radio as well as a flashlight, siren and a compartment for 3 AAA batteries for an alternative power source! General, what else do you want for $25? I think it's a great thing!

Pros
  • High marks for grip and durability from testers
Cons
  • Not as thick as other picks
