Fast Thrills

I've read this book before and now with a new cover and design, it's even more fun the second time! Set in a dystopian steampunk Chicago ruled by a tyrannical energy company, this is a compelling alternate take on the Prohibition-era that focuses on ordinary people trying to survive and eventually lead an insurgency. I love how I can connect to the true story that inspired this alternate historical universe, and the historical terminology and slang really help you immerse yourself in the story and give it a unique flavor and feel . A breakneck speed that will keep you reading to the very last page, I also like the two main characters here: Evelyn and Dante. Evelyn feels like the ideal of what every literary heroine should be: flawed but strong and positive, and most importantly, with a voice that makes her feel totally authentic. She's well balanced by Dante, a brooding anti-hero who's dragged along on a ride. The story also balances a youthful world with elements of sci-fi and fantasy, from high tech to magical powers that always keep things fresh and interesting. While at some points I wish the story would slow down a bit and focus a little more on the characters' relationships outside of the main duo and explain a little more of the core concepts at play here, I'm sure they do will be explored in depth in a possible sequel, which I look forward to. Fantastically interesting debut by this author!
