Can be a good choice for retrofitting old headlights
Some trailer headlights need replacing which are surface mounted but become damaged when loading a trailer or reversing into bushes etc. In my case, this involved cutting a hole and pushing a rubber seal in. Not that difficult with plasma cutting, but other hole cutting methods are certainly possible. LEDs should work for a long time and consume as little energy as possible.
