Review on Enhance Connectivity with EYOOLD USB Converter Adapter Optical by Jump Robinson

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Don't use a USB 3.0 port for a 3.5 IDE hard drive

I give 4 out of 5 because there are no instructions (other than the obvious how to connect in the picture). While it's a fairly basic device and works well, I've had issues with older IDE drives. I got this from a lot of my old hard drives between 1998 and 2014, especially the 3.5" IDEs, which are a bit trickier than the others because they need extra input power (which is included). The 12v adapter may have a 3ft cord. So if you unplug the surge protector on the floor or something like that, you might have trouble accessing the device if you try to mount it on a table. The auxiliary power connector for the drive is tight but works fine. Here's the catch: every time I plugged it into a USB 3.0 port and powered it on, the drive showed up, then shut down and froze. my computer and I would have to do a hard reset. I've tried a few jumper settings and reboots and still had the same issue on an old 2004 80GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.7. On a whim I decided to slow down my USB 3 port by adding a Plugged in and connected USB 2.0 hub. . Presto! The drive works great (well enough to at least hold all the old photos and stuff). Anyway, I haven't tried a USB 2.0 port because they're all unavailable on this computer, but at least if I slow down 3.0 to 2.0 I can get this thing to work. Hope this helps someone.
