I have always used Spry and loved their line of products, including their gums and lozenges, for their taste and for reducing tooth decay in my children and I. It seemed effective because whenever we used Xlear toothpaste we had no tooth decay compared to years of using regular Crest or Colgate fluoride toothpastes. In those years there was a lot of tooth decay, and since then our diet has not changed much. If anything, I think we probably consume even more sugar today than we did many years ago. "Unlike sorbitol and other 6-carbon polyols, xylitol cannot be metabolized by plaque bacteria and may therefore promote mineralization." This is from the European Journal of Dentistry. BUT the same source also points out: "Studies with low daily doses of xylitol are known to generally show no caries-preventive effect. three or more times a day, with a daily dose of 5-6 grams. (Eur J Dent. Apr 2009; 3(2): 81-82.) How does xylitol prevent tooth decay? Inhibits growth of oral bacteria Streptococcus mutans. (Incidentally, it also prevents periodontitis and has been shown to be effective in reducing the risk of ear infections.) Other studies I've seen have shown that the optimal dose for preventing tooth decay is 4.3 to 10 grams per day . So how much xylitol is in this toothpaste, and how much do you get if you put a small amount on your toothbrush each day? This is difficult to quantify as everyone uses a different amount of toothpaste. However, some smart people have already done the calculations for us at xylitolpreventscavities.com. Basically, Spry contains 25% xylitol, and it's not the first ingredient after the active ingredient that is fluoride. The first ingredient is water. Every time we brush our teeth with this product, we ingest half a gram to a gram of xylitol. The more xylitol there is in the product, the closer we get to the optimal dose. The highest concentration is found in Squigle toothpaste (which you can find here on Revain; I have it and now that I know it I will use it more often than Spry). To get the optimal dose of xylitol in your tooth decay prevention diet, you'll likely need to chew Spry gum and lozenges at least several times a day. In the United States it was even removed from their water sources, I avoided fluoridated toothpastes. Ah, but Xlear Spry says the label contains 0.243% fluoride. For this reason I removed one star from a possible five star rating. Xlear makes a fluoride-free Spry toothpaste and I would give it five stars. I love the taste of this toothpaste. It's very minty but not overpowering. It took me three days to get used to the different mint flavor, but after that I always liked it more than any regular fluoride toothpaste I've ever used, including Tom's. My kids like the taste too and it's important to encourage brushing. Overall I would recommend it, but not its fluoride-free counterpart. Despite its length, I hope this review has helped people make an informed decision.
