I would say it might be a bit difficult for a kid or someone who has never soldered before, the components are mostly surface mount (96 leds and a quad flat IC), the rest is easy. The instructions were easy to follow. I don't think it's the spectrum of sounds, it seems to blend randomly with the music, but it still looks very neat. I've only used it as a bluetooth speaker but it seems to have a memory card slot. for mp3 or something. Also, when assembling the case, I tightened the screws to keep it from loosening.
