Works for MacBook Air with M1 chip, but with some limitations

I bought this adapter mainly for dual-screen use with my new MacBook with M1 chip. The current workaround is to use DisplayLink software and a compatible adapter to use more than one monitor. It was one of the cheapest and most versatile adapters I've liked, it also included useful features like memory card slots, two USB ports, and could work with multiple laptops - USB-c-Link or USB. Overall I would recommend this device but make sure you understand how you plan to use it and make sure the setup works for you. I've only had this device for a few days and can find some workarounds that better suit my needs, but here are my initial thoughts. If used with a MacBook with M1 chip, you must use DisplayLink with this device. It will not work with multiple displays without DisplayLink software. The DisplayLink software warns that "Your screen is being recorded". I had never seen this before and was understandably confused and concerned about this warning, but after researching it I found that it is a requirement for the software to work. Notes for MacBook users: 1) As far as I can tell, only HDMI 1 is extended on a Mac. HDMI 2 will only reflect. To use dual screens with my laptop I need to use HDMI 1 and a VGA adapter. In my experience, using both HDMIs only allowed me to mirror my screen. 2) My previous setup was dual monitors and I was using my laptop in "clamshell mode" (closed). If I close the lid now, he goes to sleep. I've read that it's possible with newer versions of Mac OS, but I haven't gotten it to work yet. At the moment I have to leave it slightly open, which can be a little annoying when I move the cursor between screens or accidentally close the lid. 3) The VGA adapter doesn't screw in like most. It sure fits, but if you set up the device or laptop at all, you're likely to lose connection.

Pros
  • Like everything before
Cons
  • Expensive insurance
