Good improvement over AW130

Somewhat confusing why it wasn't called the Nikon AW140 as it really is the 4th camera in the series (after AW100, AW110, AW120 and AW130). On paper, the W300 isn't much better than the AW130. There's no improved sensor size, no improved zoom, and while it's 4k, it's not 4k 60P. However, there are many hidden improvements that make this camera significantly better than the AW130/AW120 (which are almost identical). Image and video stabilization is much better. They also fixed a lot of white balance and dynamic range issues. The old AW series required a lot of work with exposure compensation and metering to get images that weren't over or under exposed. But the new W300 does it much better. This is especially noticeable when shooting landscapes in cloudy weather. Nikon has also added D-Lighting to this camera which is also very helpful. Another nice plus was that they reduced the noise blur a bit. Many of the older AW cameras corrected the noise, aggressively blurred the image, and then sharpened it to give it a "watercolor" look. It was a disaster for some of the photos. For example, shooting trees caused most of the leaves to fuse together, giving you an "abstract image". Now it has improved a lot. The screen has greatly improved, which is marginal in some ways, but it helps with exposure compensation and checking that your shot came out. On the other hand, this is a much heavier camera than previous AWs and they removed the map function, which I was very disappointed with. Whether this is a worthy competitor to the Olympus TG-5 is a good question. I suspect the TG-5 is better at taking photos in low light, shooting underwater video and doing macro photography. While the W300 is probably the best camera for above water video (mainly due to better stabilization), better average image quality and cheaper price.

Pros
  • High marks for support and durability from testers
Cons
  • Some small things
