I purchased this item to bring my mother's remains to Colorado to scatter her ashes. It was the perfect size for a small amount of ash, about a cup and a half I'd say, then I put it in a ziplock bag, squeezed out as much air as possible, then rolled up the bag to fit the cylinder. If I hadn't put them in the bag, I'm sure you could put a little more in it. Then I taped the lid shut, took her death certificate and we drove to the airport where I really had no problems. They of course pushed my bag aside to see what it was. I was a bit embarrassed saying "oh it's just mommy" lol show the certificate and they let us go. A good product
