After 3 sets of brackets and 4 attempts to drill new holes and screw the brackets into the wall, I finally figured out the problem. It wasn't about the placement of the brackets (I used a level) - it was about the panels being cut unevenly. I have four panels in a row above the patio door. Every other board is 2 inches off the ground, the other two are about an inch longer. I had to sit and look at it for a while to understand it and then I measured the plates. Naturally. This is really frustrating because I love the fabric and these are real sheer fabrics that offer enough transparency. What a boring problem! I will not be buying 4 more panels so if you buy them measure them before hanging.
