Poor design = instant failure

This pump's looks promise to be a practical and flexible multi-purpose pump, but looks can be deceiving. The stem is an amazingly thin-walled plastic tube that is attached to the working piston with a single bolt about 1/8 inch from the end of the piston. The screw cut through the plastic when I first used the pump. I can only imagine that other users haven't seen the same error as me because their pumps were epoxy potted or chemically welded at that joint. My pump may not have been assembled correctly, but that's not the only issue. (1) Thin-walled plastic. Possible pump shaft failure is inevitable and I worry it will happen when I need it most. (2) Not repairable. The bilge pump is too important to safety to be field repaired and this pump is chemically welded. This pump is irreparable. (3) Large diameter. Large piston diameters mean high pumping forces. This makes the pump more difficult to use and increases the likelihood of mechanical failure. (4) Elastomer wiper in place of O-ring. The wiper on the piston tends to seize because it cannot be lubricated. Some other users have commented on this as well. This allows the manufacturer to use more uneven gaps, but makes the pump inferior. (5) For the effort required to use this pump, there wasn't a good way to hold it that didn't tire my forearms. Not everything is that bad. .(1) I liked the design of the check valves. They looked solid and worked well when I tested the pump. (2) Double barb connectors means the pump is very flexible. (3) The grip was comfortable and there were no burrs to cut my hand. Do not buy. Look for Beckson Hand Pumps instead!
