I did field recordings of a Bushman choir in Botswana. I wanted to play back to the band what they had just recorded, but my recorder speakers couldn't get it loud enough. My colleague hooked up external speakers, which delivered almost solid distortion at sufficient volume. I figured that when I got back to the US I would need to find an external speaker that 1) can play loud, 2) sound decent, and 3) run on batteries. Im9 is perfect for that. These boxes can play quite loudly, so I used them as a loudspeaker system (at my grandparents' anniversary party with 150 guests). The frequency response is not flat enough for use as a studio monitor (highs and lows sound a bit "bloated" to my ears), but it sounds good enough for my use in the field. And the battery life was great. I've had them for six months with one set of batteries. A few small quibbles. Not enough to take away from my overall happiness. I wish there was some feedback on the volume controls and that they retained my previous settings. Normally, the "default" volume when the device is turned on is too high for normal listening. I also wish there was a way to detach the speakers for better stereo separation. However, this is a great unit.
