I have a basic wired system in my big yard and I use this wireless system in my front yard. I created a smaller zone for this and the setup is very similar to the base system. With the wireless connection, I had more space to place my battery powered system. I anchored it to the base of a large maple tree where it marks the right edge of the border. The base system uses 10 D batteries, which is plenty for D batteries but should expect to last about a year. I recommend buying a good brand name battery that is weather resistant outdoors. I took the batteries out indoors when it gets cold outside. The manufacturer has improved the new collar. It looks better and instead of a special disposable battery, it can now be recharged! This saves me money on the battery in the long run. One thing to keep in mind when installing is not to dig it too deep to maintain a good signal. Also, be careful with the corners and don't bend the wires too much. After laying the wire in the ground, cover it with loose soil so that rainwater does not accumulate in small ditches. Before my landscaper had to aerate my lawn, I had to warn him and tell him to stay away from the wires. I didn't want to do it again.
