They keep dirt out!
I didn't think it would actually work but they did. They fit my Polar drinking bottle perfectly and have protected the bottle very well from mud when cycling and river water when kayaking. It was a pleasant surprise for me to see how well they work. We ride gravel a lot and it was awful when my water bottle was covered in mud. Now none of that!
