I thought the shelves were longer but to be honest they fit the space I had. I was afraid the wood would snap when I put the screws in as they are very light, but they went in easily without splitting. Brackets are fun because you can decide how you want them. I made two under the shelf and one with the shelf in the bracket and they were easy to put together with quick instructions. I was concerned because when you insert the shelf into the bracket you lose 2 potential spots to drill it into the wall so unlike other shelves this shelf only attaches with 2 screws. I have 6 screws attaching it to the wall. It's holding up and I don't have any heavy objects on it so I have a feeling everything will be fine. However, I recommend inserting at least one of these screws into the stud for support. Happy with her looks!
