Review on πŸ”Š Gefen Digital Audio Decoder (GTV-DD-2-AA): Crystal Clear Audio Encoding and Decoding Solution by John Pound

So far so good - for analog audio Stereo headphones

This digital audio decoder still works. HDTV. It's powered by the AC adapter, not the USB cable, so it doesn't cycle on and off with my TV like I'd hoped. When receiving PCM signals and changing channels, the analog audio signal for the headset is generated quite quickly. When changing channels to an encoded Dolby Digital signal, it takes some time before the decoder recognizes and decodes the signal as expected. Accordingly, there is a slight delay before an audio signal is produced for my headphones. For those complaining about latency, this is probably normal with most AV receivers and also when decoding Dolby Digital signals. In the future I will have to install a splitter in front of this decoder, which halves the optical power. I'll try to update so you know how it goes. By splitting the optical signal, I can split the optical signal between my old AV receiver and this decoder/headphone. I also have high and low quality TOSLINK optical cables. I'm curious if the quality of the TOSLINK cable affects the performance of this decoder. There are several headphone systems that accept digital optical inputs directly and have a built-in decoder. However, they are very expensive. This decoder allows me to use my old analog headphones for a longer period of time. I have to say that this decoder seems pretty expensive considering what's out there. Reason for four stars. There is probably only one chip. They could make it cheaper if they eliminated the digital coax input and made the decoder just for the optics. If they were powered by a USB port, they might as well do without the adapter. I've seen other USB powered models but can't comment on how well they work. Update: I finally received the optical splitter I ordered. I was able to split 50% of the optical power to send to the AV receiver and this Gefen decoder. After that, the Gefen decoder continued to work. Compared to the Sony AV receiver, the Gefen decoder took a little longer to decode Dolby Digital signals after changing channels. I don't know the long-term implications of providing half the optical power to the decoder. I would add a photo showing this if they exclude the digital coax input and make the decoder for optics only. If they were powered by a USB port, they might as well do without the adapter.
