These candles are no worse if not better than expensive branded candles. I have about a dozen Luminara candles and wanted burgundy candles for the holidays. While I love the Luminara brand, I hated spending so much on something that could only be used for such a short time. To my surprise, these candles are perfect for my needs. In fact, with the included remote control you can not only turn the candles on and off, but also dim the brightness, set a timer and even turn off the flickering effect for a constant light that gently pulsates. This feature is not available on my Luminara. Others claim that a slight click can be heard as the wick rotates. That's true, but it doesn't bother me as it's very insignificant. Luminara candles make the same clicking sound, although some of their candles are quiet thanks to newer technology. However, this does not apply to the entire line of Luminara candles. It's hit and miss. The only scam I've encountered with these candles is that after I got my hands on them there was a small trace of red dye on my hands. So be careful where you place them so you don't transfer the color to something else. I would order another set but it looks like they're already sold out.
