My almost 8 year old daughter suffers from this. Luckily she doesn't have as widespread an infection as the others, but it's still a major nuisance. This is mainly because she is susceptible to MRSA and has contracted several shellfish and needs antibiotics. Unfortunately, she tends to get them mostly in high friction areas and on her buttocks, where they're more likely to get irritated and infected. I was desperate for a product that would help her without the constant use of antibiotics. I did a bit of research and ZymaDerm was the only product that had "all things" meant to help heal shellfish. It's also the only product our pediatrician has heard of and felt good about giving the green light to try it. With consistent use twice a day, ZymaDerm quickly brings molluscum papules to the head. My understanding is that the shellfish need to release the seed of infection, which looks like a tiny hard bead, in order to heal. I warn you, these things look particularly gross just before they get better. First, the clam itself becomes larger. Then the surroundings of the shell and the shell itself become red and irritated. The center of the shell then turns into a large yellowish "pimple". DO NOT attempt to squeeze it out unless you are sure you can do so for hygienic reasons. I usually just let them sprout on their own, but sometimes the seed would germinate while I was applying the medicine. They heal faster once the viral germ is out, but getting the child to cooperate with the procedure is quite difficult. Since I've been using ZymaDerm all the shells have grown and healed beautifully, although she currently has a few shells in very difficult spots on her buttocks. Basically we do this twice a day, sometimes just before bed, the daily routine is as follows: 1. If she has multiple heads at once, I wash her with Hibiclens first to prevent MRSA infection as she is prone to it. 2. I dry. with a clean paper towel.3. Wipe the affected area with a Stridex wipe or other salicyl wipe. I do this to exfoliate those areas. (If she doesn't have active shellfish, I use a tea tree body wash and skip the Hibiclens and Stridex steps.) 4. Apply ZymaDerm to ALL shellfish, even the smallest ones.5. If she has an advantage, there is a head, a mollusk, I will also lubricate the lesions with mupirocin ointment. This is a prescription from the pediatrician. FYI I used mupirocin exclusively for over a year before searching the internet frantically. The teacher always told me not to worry about the shellfish, they will go away on their own. The problem is that your child continues to be infected with them and they spread and get infected. Mupirocin alone didn't work for us. Since we started using ZymaDerm we have seen more improvements and more consistent and faster healing than we have had with them for the past two years. I highly recommend. If I'm only treating an immature mussel, I simply apply ZymaDerm twice a day. I've been using it for about five weeks now. Also, I find it quite difficult for a child to put bandages on and try to take them off twice a day to clean them. A fabric such as a garter if the lesion is on the arm, or just loose cotton clothing changed twice a day to work much better.
