Forced to work with HP Pavilion Gaming Desktop

I have an HP Pavilion 790-0xxx Gaming Desktop. I wanted to add an additional hard drive to my computer, but my system didn't come with an extra power or data cable for the additional hard drive. I've searched the HP website but found nothing. I'm also too stingy to pay a computer technician to find the right cables and install them for me. I'm an electrical engineer and computer scientist, so I'm very familiar with understanding the innards of a computer. So based on a review from another bgrimmly buyer I took a chance and bought this cable along with a regular SATA III data cable. This power cord is good quality although a bit short for my case but it works. For an HP motherboard, the 6-pin end of the mini-cable will need to be reassigned. I used a voltmeter to measure the voltage on each pin of the 6-pin minijack soldered to the motherboard while it was powered on. I used this information to determine which pins to switch in the 6-pin minijack. I used a tiny screwdriver (jewelry or eyeglass screwdriver) to pry out the damaged pins in the connector and then used needle nose pliers to insert each pin into its corresponding hole in the connector and then reattached the mini 6 connector to the connector. socket on the mainboard. Worked the first time and has been working great for a few weeks now. Here's a tip. The power interface pinout on each SATA III hard drive is as follows: from left to right (imagine looking at the back of the drive and holding the power cable in your right hand while plugging it into the back of the drive) : 12V, 0V/Ground, 5V, 0V/Ground, Auxiliary/Unassigned (5th pin is not always used, not for me). Use a voltmeter to determine which pin of the 6-pin minijack on the motherboard is getting the correct voltage. Then use a small screwdriver to pry each pin out as needed and use pliers to reinsert each pin into its corresponding hole in the connector. The PC should start up without any problems, but you'll need to log in as an administrator and run the Disk Management utility to initialize, format, and assign a drive letter to the new drive. WARNING. These steps should only be performed by a technically skilled person.
