A monitor that does its job very well as long as you don't look far off-axis in portrait mode shouldn't be smart enough to switch to portrait mode without your help and your operating system without making changes to the low-light settings. (Possibly without a magnifying glass and flashlight.) The buttons are labeled left to right 1, 2, small dot, slightly different small dot, all black, lightly engraved on the plastic. However, all of these things are mostly tweaked or learned after a few days of minor annoyances when viewed on a standard landscape monitor. The picture is quite good and very bright. I have it next to a high-resolution Samsung and it manages not to look out of place.
