While this bag is beautiful and a great addition to my collection, it's not built to hold tons of weight. I've been known for packing my bags to the brim with all my knick-knacks and electronics, and the top handle on this bag (not the straps) isn't exactly designed to hold a 40-pound book weight. Despite this, the leather is in pristine condition and the stitching is very nice. Skin also has the remarkable property of aging fairly quickly. Also, the place is much bigger than it seems in the picture. To give you an idea of how much space it has, I'll tell you what I usually put in it: a laptop, an iPad, 2 notepads, a magazine, 1 medium book, 2 large books, a stack of papers, a pencil case, colored paper. Regular size pencils, wallet and folders. This bag has 4 front pockets, two large inner pockets (12 inches) and two inner zippered pockets (12 inches). All in all, I highly recommend this bag. However, it is good to remember that if you plan to put as many things in the bag as it is big enough, you should only use the top handle for decoration and not lift the bag as the leather on the handle is not stiff enough is to hold such a heavy weight.
