Gear up with that junk

I tried using the dowels that came with it and found them flimsy and totally unusable. I drilled through the wall panel but still had trouble getting the dowels in. I finally inserted them, but then they twisted when I tried to insert the screws and fell out of the holes. You might as well throw them away and buy good ones at your local hardware store. With real racks, everything is fine.
