Strange Smell Fondgem Black Genuine Leather Necklace - 2.0mm Genuine Leather Chain

I bought this Fondgem Black Genuine Leather Necklace - 2.0mm Genuine Leather for my granddaughter to use as a choker necklace. The chains have a strange smell. I'm not sure if the smell will go away. I'm keeping them for the price but not sure if they're safe.
