My husband has a rare congenital muscular dystrophy (Carey-Fineman-Zeeter syndrome) which, with age, progresses to the point that he can no longer walk. At 63, he is mostly confined to a wheelchair. He also often freezes due to muscle diseases. He has ALWAYS lived with pets since childhood. 6 months after our 17.5 year old Chow died in Spring 2018 he asked if we could start looking for a small dog to sit on his lap. We found Willy, a 2 year old 13 1b rat terrier who was raised quite tight. It was the perfect match for us. Since my husband's reflexes have slowed, Willy moves a little faster for him, which is normal around the house but not for movement on the street or short trips in the car (with my husband in our van and the seat buckled). An added benefit is the warmth Willie provides in the backpack. In the summer I plan to put some small blue ice packs in my iPad case to keep Willie from overheating. The backpack fits my husband perfectly (5ft 8in and 195lbs) he usually wears size XL. It might be a bit tight for someone taller, in my opinion the max would be a small size of 2XL, but it would definitely fit smaller people. Willie fits in perfectly and the extra zip so his head can peek out is great. He hugs me and then rests his head on my husband's chest. I'm comfortable being able to tie Willie to my backpack so he doesn't pop out when the mood strikes. It's rare, but it happens. My husband's hands are too weak to hold the line when Willie really pulls. What it offers best is COMFORT as the hard poly (rubber) bottom allows it to rest on your feet. I have a sack that I hang on the side and occasionally put Willie in when I'm waiting for the stove fitter or the plumber or whatever, but he has to lie down (and he does). Front backpack allows Willie to adjust position. And it makes it easier for my husband to control Willy's movements. Also, there's plenty of room for his flexible leash, other gear (phone, wallet, iPad, etc.) AND a small water bottle and a soda bottle. And of course treats for both. I know Willy doesn't mind because when I take it out of the closet it starts jumping up and down to get on my husband's lap. I don't recommend it for regular car journeys as deploying the side airbag on the driver's side could break Willie's neck. We are very aware of this and if we decide to go on a short trip with Willy in our backpack (to the family 5 km away), my husband puts his hands between Willy's head and the airbag as a protective shield. For longer distances, we train Willy with Zugo, who is in the Wheelchair seated, it's difficult to create systems that offer independence.Used as a front bag, this backpack allows my husband to spend some time alone with Willy outside for "walks" or shopping both, etc. I have have used kurgo machines before and they have never let me down.my favorite abigail is 17 1/2 (very old for a chow) and has had severe osteoarthritis. She liked the lift I got from Kurgo. When she wanted to move from one level to another on our sunny porch, she would bark and her maid (me) would pick her up and help her up or down. It took her ONCE to learn it. I found this product easy to trust and it works.
