This is the first small engine tachometer I have ever installed. It couldn't be simpler: simply wrap the sensor cable around the spark plug cable. This device also has a temperature sensor that can be installed along with the spark plug. Along with cumulative run time tracking, engine hours, engine temperature and RPM are displayed on one screen. How cool is that for $25? And it can do more, but you'll have to wade through thick instructions to figure out how to set up temperature and RPM alerts (I haven't looked into that yet). Also, you may need to go deep into settings to set up your engine type (i.e. number of cylinders and piston stroke). Once you set it up, it should work without too much trouble. I find this tachometer particularly useful because I use it on the motor that powers the machine I built to strip paint from fence boards. This tachometer allows me to reach my target RPM for optimal performance. The fact that I can also keep track of total uptime makes scheduled maintenance a little easier. Overall the quality is pretty good, solid and with an IP67 rating it should work just fine in muddy and wet conditions.
