Review on ASUS Ultra Slim I7 1165G7 Thunderbolt UX425EA EH71 by Darrin Lucas

Revainrating 5 out of 5

I vowed never to buy Asus again.

I vowed never to buy an Asus again, but this is a very attractive laptop and I've decided to give Asus another chance. Asus has lost me as a customer in the past because of their terrible mouse drivers. Few things are more annoying than a hopping mouse when trying to get work done. When I buy a laptop, there are five main things I look for: display, weight, mouse, battery life, and keyboard. This laptop has a pretty good (not amazing) matte non-touch display, very little backlighting, and great viewing angles. . This is absolutely NOT a 400 nits display, it appears to be around 250 nits - 7 out of 10. At 2.58 lbs, the weight is a bit more than I would like - 7 out of 10. The large glass trackpad on this mouse is absolutely amazing , one of the best I've ever used - 10 out of 10. The battery life is very good. Mina measures 67.962Wh. I'd say 10 hours is a reasonable expectation with normal light usage - 8.5 out of 10. The keyboard is also very good, decent 1.4mm travel and nice actuation, great backlighting - 8 out of 10 Some useful details: The keyboard backlight has three brightness levels. The keyboard backlight stays on for 1 minute and then turns off automatically due to inactivity. The keyboard backlight turns on again when you move the mouse. Asus is known for its horrible mouse drivers that contribute to mouse twitching, but I don't (thankfully) see that in this laptop yet. As funny as it is, you can't upgrade the RAM in this laptop. You stuck with what is soldered on the motherboard - not clear. However, due to a slight, barely audible electrical noise from the motherboard, I am able to return this laptop. If you've ever had XPS, you might know what I'm talking about. Dells are notorious for this junk and I was surprised to hear this from Asus. An embarrassing problem with an otherwise excellent laptop. Update July 9, 2021: I kept the laptop and am mostly glad I did. The battery life is excellent. The mentioned electrical noise is almost inaudible. The numeric keypad on the mouse is nothing more than a gimmick. I hate the fact that you can't upgrade RAM.
