A must for field work. They are lightweight, repel small amounts of water droplets and dry quickly when wet. My favorite part is the side leg pockets on each side, which are perfect for stashing a small laptop. The waistband is stretchy and comfortable, but there are also belt loops if you need a belt or a place to thread a compass (or whatever) for secure storage. Stock up because once you've worn a pair, you won't want to go back to anything else.
