Review on ASUS VG27AQ1A Gaming Monitor: Compatible DisplayPort, 2560x1440p, 170Hz, Swivel & Tilt Adjustment, Flicker-Free, Built-In Speakers by Andrew Lesesne

Revainrating 4 out of 5

VG27AQ 27 ". Decent, but probably not worth the price of $429 (excluding tax).

This is actually my first mid-range gaming monitor, so I don't have much to say other than a few points. This is my monthly review. If you think you can accept the criticism I make in this review, buy it. The overall rating is 95% negative but I still love this monitor after fixing all the issues mentioned below. The backlight mostly leaks around corners; very noticeable even if the room is bright enough. But it's not scary enough to upset me (I mostly use the monitor in a dark room). I like the height-adjustable stand. Assembling the stand is very easy. Plastic but very strong and durable. I really hate port layout. In my unique situation, my table has a limited height. So it's very difficult when I need to plug and unplug the cable. It's best to place the plug-in port on the side of the monitor, not the bottom. Connection: - Purchase a basic HDMI cable from Amazon. The included HDMI cable frequently lost connection, causing me to endure a plug and unplug nightmare. I can't seem to connect blindly, although I identify the correct site. - I don't know if it's the cable or the monitor itself, but sometimes I get a brief 1-3 second black screen with Amazon Basic HDMI cable. Still better than the supplied Asus HDMI cable which very often causes a black screen and the solution is to unplug and plug back in. - If you're wondering whether to upgrade to HDMI 2.0 or a 1.2 display port. I'll choose HDMI unless you want 155Hz instead of 144Hz (specified in the manual). If you want to enable HDR and not bother with things like ELMB and overclocking, choose an HDMI connection. Image Quality: Generally good for my eyes. A reminder that when HDR is enabled, you cannot adjust the brightness in the OSD, but you can adjust some image settings such as Overclocking, Sharpness, VividPixel, ELMB Sync. Brightness: 0 brightness is still too bright. It is extremely bad when I use it for PS4 in a dark room at night because there is no way to reduce the brightness even more. The warm color setting in the OSD makes the color a little warmer. Movie Stars Solution: PC - I use software to adjust brightness and warm colors; Console/PS4 - I manually adjust the RGB to make it redder and keep 2 settings, 1 for non-darkroom and 1 for darkroom. scroll. Set Trace Free (Image -> More -> Trace Free) to 0. This looks like a bug but is flagged as a feature. For me, not an audiophile, the sound is a bit below average. As speakers I use a Logitech Z130. Or my gaming laptop speakers sound much better. I personally prefer not to have a speaker at all to keep costs down. This is literally Asus forcing customers to buy something they never use. This is a gaming monitor, not an office monitor; So Asus either makes great speakers or nothing at all.

Pros
  • Asus
Cons
  • Overheating: If the monitor is not properly ventilated, it can overheat and cause performance issues.
