Review on πŸŽ’ Black Ballistic Burton Spruce Backpack by Steven Saric

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Awesome leisure/travel backpack with great materials and features

Awesome backpack hands down. Top-loading plus zipped main compartment and external pockets? Check. Elastic pockets for bottles, check. Waterproof YKK zippers with good closure, check it out. Duraflex buckles, check it out! The ballistic material feels stiffer and more protective than even 1000d Cordura in my opinion, giving the pack a more stylish feel. I'm very impressed with the quality and ease of use of the Spruce package. Burton has done his homework on this and it shows. I received a black ballistic nylon which is different from Heather (and 10x better than the Annex pack I have, but the price reflects the difference in material and quality). I was looking for something that opens like a backpack but can also be zipped up, with easy access zipped pockets and an external water bottle holder. Black ballistic material is a high-quality material, just like suitcases or other travel bags. The canvas bottom is amazing, especially since I've taken this backpack on a trip and sat on a variety of surfaces; nothing gets wet or dirty at the bottom, it's easy to erase! Stretch bottle pockets on each side are important to me and they are very well made from a new stretch material like Osprey or similar (no bad mesh stretch pockets here). Extremely useful external "First Order" zipped pockets (top of lid, fleece lined lid for phone or goggles, diagonal vertical front, open front patch pocket with tarpaulin that easily fits a small tablet or headphones). I've had many packages from cheaper to more expensive like Goruck and this one is still my favorite. It's a top-loading/semi-clamshell hybrid that's easy to climb into and the internal organization is perfect for a 26-liter pack. Inside there is a padded laptop compartment, a tablet compartment and organizer compartments. It is worth noting that the backpack is one large compartment with an organizer, as well as external pockets. I didn't miss 2 separate compartments for the outer pockets, as is the case with most backpacks. The straps are strong yet very comfortable, with shoulder-friendly neoprene padding and an adjustable sternum strap. The only downside would be that the back panel is a bit warmer without the typical air mesh you see on other packs; but I would very much like to buy it again. Durable ballistic nylon, canvas bottom, stands up when needed, has structure, easy access, and a Burton lifetime warranty (surprised the snowboard company did this so well :) The magnetic buckles for closing the lid are well-made and easy to attach. work while being lighter than the feedlocks I've had before. I can easily tighten the lid and quickly open the lid. A bonus is the ability to leave the lid open, as the zips secure the main compartment even when the lid is open. Plus 2 compression straps on each side for a more secure load. I removed the 1 inch waist belt which I don't think this backpack needs. The Burton logo isn't loud or obnoxious, but it's not as subtle as other travel or everyday packs. Little is known about Burton. Backpack "Spruce" I wanted to give my opinion on this after a week's trip the day after receipt. I took a risk and chose this backpack and it was worth it! I hope this helps someone look at the "Spruce" backpack, which unfortunately flies. under the EDC/travel radar. Might be better for everyday use, commuting etc as the clamshell only opens about 2/3 and isn't entirely flat - this might be a deal breaker for some. I'll try to add some photos later and see what size laptop fits (15.6 inch minimum, 17 inch might push it).

Pros
  • Top marks for support and durability from testers
Cons
  • Not as thick as other options
