Addendum: After a few weeks of airing the strong chemical smell has subsided and has been replaced by the pleasant leather smell that I was expecting. Aggressive scrubbing and wiping with a clean cloth eventually reduced the amount of paint stripped. Now that it's serviceable I've noticed a factory defect in the stitching, see photo. Upon opening the tightly packed and sealed package, I noticed a strong chemical odor. I was hoping, even expecting, a nice rich leather scent, but what I got was more like an industrial cleaner. After reading reviews of such bags, I was concerned about paint leaking from the strap, so I took a clean white sock and rubbed the strap with medium pressure for a few seconds. I was hoping to simulate the friction of carrying a bag on a shoulder strap. The white sock is gone with black paint as feared. I've been using the bag since I received it five days ago. I hope giving it time to air out and "dry" will alleviate both of those problems. The bag appears to be made of decent materials, with heavy duty metal zips etc. I'm a bit concerned about the strap attachment point as it's a simple piece of stitched leather which can fail over time.
