I hated it for the first 3-4 days because the scraper gave off a chemical smell so strong and awful it gave me a headache. However, the smell has finally dissipated completely and is now fantastic. The black goes much better with my furniture than a similar product my cat has used before (which was a tan color). and he's handsome and tall, so she can scratch to her heart's content. ****************************** made this a few weeks ago so it took over a year and a half and my cat loves it and uses it every day. In fact I tried to get her another scratching post to replace this one but she refused to touch the new one and chose my sofa arms instead. -_- So I had to go back and order this one again! This time I foresaw the release of gas and left it out for a few days after assembling. When I returned it, the unpleasant smell was gone.
