The first time I bought something like this was right before training in Hawaii when I was in the Marine Corps. You think Hawaii, you think beaches and sand and warm weather. Typical for the US Marine Corps, although we were high up on a large island where it was cold, damp and covered in lava. If you're in a convoy and not the lead vehicle, suck up the finest lava dust imaginable. My green recon cloak combined with a pair of goggles saved me and I loved it. It was chilly but the sun was very strong so if I wear it around my neck it won't get burned either. Enough I think, even if it gets warm, the neck can still breathe, but it blocks the wind very well. Later in August of that year I was sent to Kuwait to train convoys before leaving for Iraq. Even at 130F I wore this to block out all the sand and it was very comfortable. We've found that if you just cover your head completely, the flies won't bother you as much, but you can still breathe normally. As there are no seams at all there are no hot spots and even when wet it was nice and cool. It also dries very quickly. Even in the Iraqi winter I kept wearing it as it kept my neck warm and a cold neck bothers me a lot. Another year went by and another tour of duty in Iraq and I took the same recon suit and wore it almost or all the time. the least was with me. It's needed in case a sandstorm hits and you want to breathe. Seven years later, I still have the same Recon bandage, but I don't wear it as often because it seems to have acquired a permanent stench that even special products can't wash off. You can get rid of detergents. Now I only use it outside when it's cold or walking the dog, but I still want to keep my neck warm. I bought a black one from Revain a few years ago and have worn it all winter. The strength of this item is that you can use it however you want. In cold weather, I only tie it once so it's twice as thick. I don't need it that long so it works great to keep my ears and face warm even when cycling in 30 degree weather. Imagine spending some time outdoors without him. I even put it on my dog's head to keep his ears and neck warm.
