I used some 3-in-1 oil to soften the top coat and then applied a light coat to the leather strop for my Worksharp sharpening system. Does a good job of getting "brilliant sharpness" once I've gone through the other steps. Note: Let it dry for an hour or two after applying the application or there will be green chunks and oil splatters all over it. I assume this is normal on a home made honing block. For a household, this tub seems like the stash of a lifetime. Also: At some point you will make the blade less sharp when you sharpen it. Do not exaggerate.
