Affordable, scans and prints 11x17, colored text and images are grainy

I bought this printer for a number of reasons: 1. It cost $2292 and could scan and print 11 x 173 pages . It had an automatic document feeder. Here is an overview of the performance: > Scanning - appears to be fine, both on the platen and in the ADF. I've scanned a variety of formats from 3 x 5 index cards to 11 x 17 pages and it works like a champ. The scanning software is stable (in other words, it doesn't crash) and has enough controls to be useful. > Black Text - Black text is output normally. Can be used for notes or personal documents.> Colored Text - Individual dots of cyan, magenta, and yellow that mix to form different colors are clearly visible when printing colored text. Can be used for a rough proof, but not when sharing or checking color > Color Images - Again, discrete dots of cyan, magenta, and yellow are evident. The quality is good enough for a school report card or a rough brochure check, but I wouldn't use it for a pretty greeting card, framed photo, or professional business document. Size - some reviewers talk about how big the printer is, but hey, it scans and prints in 11x17 format and has two paper trays. When I unboxed it and compared it to my old 8.5x11 printer, it wasn't much bigger. I think it's quite economical for its features. > Epson Connect โ€“ Allows printing from iPhone, iPad, Android, etc. via Epson's Cloud Print Service. I have read the user agreement and decided not to use it as when you sign up you give Epson the right to view any documents you print from their cloud. Instead, I just print from my laptop over the home Wi-Fi network rather than my tablet or phone. Summary. If cost and the ability to work with 11x17 paper are important to you, this is a good solution. If the quality of colored text or images is important to you, you should look elsewhere. Do not use Epson Connect when printing personal or confidential documents. I gave it four stars because for the price it does what I want it to do, although better color printing would be nice.

Pros
  • There's something to it
Cons
  • Not as good as it says it is
