This bed confused one of my dogs at first. After opening the package and putting the bed on the floor, our little 11 pound Chi (not pictured) thought it was a giant stuffed animal. He started moving around the house so I had to give him a two minute lesson on how to use this new stuffed animal. This bed is ideal for dogs that like to sleep curled up or burrowing into their bedding. I bought two 23 inch beds for each of our 11 pound dogs. These beds are not very strong, they need to be soft and flexible for the dog to "snuggle up". Spills a little right out of the box but stops. I can not confirm machine wash. Maybe a gentle cycle and drying down? In general, my dogs love the bed and that's the main thing.
