I'm elderly and although I've heard that leg cramps often mean a person has low magnesium levels I was given this to ease the pain. I take magnesium to increase my levels but it takes a while before I see the difference. When I feel a contraction starting, I grab this massager and turn on the heat, starting on the lowest setting so I don't induce the twisting cramps that occur when my calf contracts. If done right, I can stop the worst cramps before they happen. If not, and it twists, muscle grip gets bad, I turn on this massager, clench my teeth, press heat, and hit the impact head on that area. I can tell you that a massager might not stop the spasms right away, but I can tell you that it really helps and feels better than just squeezing my calf muscle and biting my lip to keep from screaming. I think the massager reduces the duration and impact of the spasm - my observation from now on. I'll keep it with me when I'm sitting or lying down. I'm sure if I were an athlete this massager would do wonders for sore muscles from running or other strenuous exercise. All I can say is that it helps me with my muscle problems.
