Only works with one port and one orientation

When connecting the cable from my Macbook Pro to the LG 5K monitor, the cable only works with one of the USB-C ports on the Macbook and only one orientation of the cable. My other Thunderbolt 3 cable works with any MacBook USB-C port and orientation. While the cable may be defective, I expect a complete failure. Most likely, the inconsistency implies that the design is marginal and unreliable. I will choose another cable.
